Dresden Files - First Impressions
As it turns out, book reviews remind me an awful lot of book reports, which still bring up bad feelings from second grade. Being that I'm an emotional elephant, and never forget a feeling, this association has proved to be somewhat of an obstacle to my intention to post book reviews. Ergo, I am switching it up a little. Here are my first impressions of book one of The Dresden Files: Storm Front. This series of books was written by Jim Butcher.
Awhile ago, I tried watching the television series based on the books, but failed to get into it, despite my liking the actors. The books were recommended to me by my daughter's high school principal. I am familiar with the experience of books being better than their filmed counterparts, and I decided to go ahead and read one. (Another contributing factor is that I currently have a small obsession with characters named "Harry," including my own.)
I like the first scene. We learn so much about the character of Harry Dresden in an entertaining way. Jumping right into the middle of his life is a great way to start a book.
I like Harry. I like his attitude, and his human weaknesses are a great contrast with the power I know he has but have yet to see. I also like how nothing ever goes according to his plans. There is always some new thing happening in the story and it's hard to put down.
That being said, I'm in the middle of chapter seven, and took a break to post this, and to reflect on the increasing awesomeness of Harry Dresden. The book got funny in chapter six and it is only getting better.
I expect I will like the rest of the book, and possibly read the next in the series. Well done, Mr. Butcher, and thank you for creating Harry Dresden.
