A few years ago, I devised a plan to be writing a draft every year. My thought process was a five year plan to proliferation and publishing. Every year I would write a rough draft, work on a revision of a previous draft, and have one first draft sitting around while I gained distance/perspective before attempting revision. In this way, I'd have a publishable novel by year five, with more in the works, churning out a book every year.
First life happened. Then death happened. Now I'm unwilling to be stopped.
My first test is to write at least a thousand words a day in the month of January. I've kept up with that just fine. Sometimes I work on my fantasy novel. Right now I'm working on essays and short stories. Creativity is flowing through me and it's refreshing.
I'm thinking now that a thousand words a day may be too easy a goal for me, at least at my present level of creativity. I find myself putting off my writing until late at night, despite the fact that I have more spare time in the mornings. However, I want to prove to myself that I can do a month at 1,000/day. If so, come February, I'm going to bump it up to 1500 per day.
This year should see the completion of the first draft of book one of my fantasy epic, followed by a revision of my mystery novel. I'm also working more on outlining, which I think will work well for second drafts of my pantser-style first drafts.
This year will also see a lot of reading, as I have bought new books about writing and I have several stacks of novels to immerse myself in.
Happy New Year, everyone and happy reading!
